Education Center
OPEN seven days per week!!
Beginning this fall, the Wetlands
Education Center is open seven days a week, from 10:00 am -
4:00 pm (trails open dawn - dusk). Since the opening of
the Education Center in September 2003, we have seen a
steady increase in visitors who want to explore the wetlands
and participate in the many opportunities we offer to families
and community members.
Now
you can visit any day of the week!
Many exciting activities are taking place
for nature enthusiasts of all ages. Free
programs include Lunch With The
Birds (every Wednesday at noon) and A Walk Through The Wetlands
(second Saturday in November and December 10:30 - 11:30 am).
Other programs with a modest fee include "Beginning Digital
Photography."
Click here for a complete list of
programs and classes being offered this fall.
Of course,
if you just want to hike on your own through the Preserve, watch the
fall migrations of the birds who call this their seasonal home,
or have fun playing and learning in the Wetlands Exhibit Hall, just
come on in at your earliest
convenience.
Feature Photo
Many photographers, amateur
and professional alike, find Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve to be
a prime setting for photographing birds, plants, and
landscapes. We thoroughly enjoy seeing the magic of this place
captured and shared through the eyes of these artistic
naturalists! Click here to
see Michael Thompson's photodonations.org collection.
The feature photo above was taken with the remote
camera of the wetlands monitoring system. Installed
at the Preserve, this camera captures some very interesting
images and uploads them to our website. Click here to check out the
latest!

Grants
Several generous
grants this season are helping to support education and citizen
involvement programs! Our gratitude goes to these grant
partners for investing in our programs:
$5,000 from
REI
is funding a new program called
the Hiker's Wildlife Survey Project. This project
provides opportunities for people who visit the Preserve to collect
wildlife and habitat information while on their daily hikes.
Stay tuned for more details! If you would like to participate
in or learn more about this project, contact Julie Magers.
$12,000
from Oregon Community
Foundation (Tualatin Valley Water Quality Endowment Fund)
is being applied toward the expansion of water quality monitoring
and education activities at the Preserve.
$20,000 from
Spirit Mountain Community
Fund also supports the Water Quality Monitoring, Education
& Partnership Project. Click
here for more exciting details about this
project.
$23,500 from Intel is
supporting three groups of local
school children to participate in a series of hands-on
science learning activities taking place both in their schools
and at the Preserve. Included in this grant-sponsored
project is the opportunity for each participant to attend a
week-long science camp at Jackson Bottom Wetlands. For
more information on this project, contact Sarah Pinnock.
Other
generous grants and financial partnerships include: Metro Greenspaces, Oregon
Forest Resources Institute.
Volunteer
Spotlight
Pat Frost started volunteering as a Center Guide
at the front desk of the Wetlands Education Center when it opened in
September of 2003. She
is a wonderful ambassador for the Preserve because she is passionate
about our mission to Connect Water, Wildlife, and
People. Pat has a great welcoming smile and shows visitors
trail maps and how to use the spotting scopes to find birds.
We are thrilled to announce that Pat is
the most recent addition to the Jackson Bottom
Wetlands Preserve Board of Directors. She will add a
wonderful perspective to the Board, looking through the lens of our
invaluable volunteers and the visitors they interact with each
day.
In other areas of her life,
Pat is a retired registered nurse who spent her career in ICU,
OBGYN, and Domestic Violence counseling work. She also volunteers in the
SMART reading program at Minter Bridge School. In addition, Pat loves to
sew and show her Standard Schnauzers in dog shows. Jackson Bottom
Wetlands Preserve is certainly fortunate to have such a great
ally!
