The River Overflows onto the Bottom
The landscape changed dramatically at Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve as the new year arrived. Just weeks prior, the ponds and marshes were covered with ice. December and January rains filled the Preserve and the water rose to the highest level in years. Thousands of waterfowl moved right in and our phones started ringing with people asking, "What happens to the animals during a flood?" This is a very good question! Though complicated to answer, here is our short version of some answers.

Volunteer Spotlight
Larry Wood retired from a position in marketing and sales in 2003. He and wife Sandy enjoy life in Hillsboro, but also enjoy traveling to adventurous destinations, such as Alaska. Larry learned about the Preserve from friend and neighbor, Jan Baker-Carlson, a Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve Board Member. He started volunteering as a Center Guide in September of ’03, the same month the Education Center opened. Larry has been incredibly reliable and brings with him a welcoming smile and mellow way of helping people navigate the wonders of the wetlands.
“I enjoy meeting and talking with visitors, answering questions, selling items in the gift shop and interacting with the regular staff. My knowledge of birds, plants and animals at the Preserve has increased greatly since starting as a volunteer. I thoroughly enjoy what I do and look forward to my 3-hour shift every Thursday afternoon.”
Thanks, Larry, for all your dedication and good humor!

Feature Photo
Many photographers, amateur and professional alike, find Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve to be a prime setting for photographing birds, plants, and landscapes. We thoroughly enjoy seeing the magic of this place captured and shared through the eyes of these creative naturalists!
This month’s feature photo was taken by Tom Brandt during one of his frequent visits to the Preserve. When one of our bald eagles caught his attention, he placed his digital camera in front of one of the spotting scopes on the deck and snapped the shot!
