Volunteers in Action

Who can Volunteer?
People of all ages and backgrounds - individuals, businesses, service groups, scout groups and school groups - are all welcome. You or your group can commit for a short-term project or you can commit as a longer term general volunteer. The main prerequisites are motivation to help out with the mission of "Connecting Water, Wildlife, and People" and willingness to work with staff and other volunteers. If you get excited about nature, you are a great candidate for volunteering.

When and where does all this happen?

At Volunteer Meetings...learning and making friends
Meetings are on the second Thursday of each month from 7:00-9:00pm at the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Education Center, 2600 SW Hillsboro Hwy., just one mile south of the Post Office on First Ave. in Hillsboro. These meetings are educational, social, and have a planning component for projects at Jackson Bottom.

At Project Workdays...doing landscaping and trail work
The third Saturday of each month volunteers get involved in a wide variety of projects to improve Jackson Bottom. Some examples: maintaining trails, planting native flowers, digging blackberry roots, building bird boxes, and replacing interpretive signs. It is usually outdoor work. We stretch, lift, hammer and laugh - it is a good way to get acquainted with the Preserve and other people.

In the Field or at Schools...teaching children
Assistance is needed any day Monday through Friday during the school day. Jackson Bottom staff will train volunteers to help deliver field programs at the Preserve and traveling programs to schools in the Tualatin Basin.

In the Marsh...checking monitoring equipment
Help calibrate and clean water quality equipment.

At the Center or at Home...doing customized volunteer work
These projects are scheduled independently around the interest and skills of the volunteer. Some may be done at home. Examples: researching and developing a program on lichens and mosses of the Preserve, taking displays to conferences, sewing costumes, or playing music at events.

At the Education Center...helping visitors
Assist with gift shop, tours, exhibits, teaching, story-time, and informational materials.

How can you become a volunteer?

It is easy. Please contact Jan Curry, Volunteer Coordinator, at 503-681-6283, email: janc@ci.hillsboro.or.us. You will fill out a volunteer profile listing your interests and skills, then talk with Jan about a good match to the work that is available at the Preserve. From then on, it is just an adventure in the world of natural history, wetlands restoration, and getting to know other people interested in similar activities. Join us - it may change your life!
