Weather at the Preserve - Rainfall

Background Information
How to Interpret the Rainfall Data
The rainfall graphs above and the hourly data show the accumulative
amount of rainfall for each day starting at midnight. Rainfall is
shown in inches. At the start of each day (at midnight), the rainfall
is zero. The amount of rainfall is incrementally added during the
day and reaches its daily total at midnight. At midnight for each
day, the data show a drop from the previous day's total rainfall
to zero.
The Water Year
The water year goes from October 1 through September
30 of the following year. It starts with the autumn months, goes
through our rainy season and then through the relatively dry summer
months.
Rainfall and other weather data have been recorded at the Preserve since 2002, when our weather station (Capricorn 2000, manufactured by Columbia Weather Systems) was deployed. The first full water year of data is 2003, which covers Oct. 1, 2002 to Sep. 30, 2003.

The rainfall at the Preserve differs from that
at the Hillsboro Airport or in Portland. This is an example of microclimates
- how climate varies within a geographical region.
The following chart shows the monthly rainfall totals
during the water year. The chart compares the water year ending Sep. 2006 with the average of the four water years between Oct. 2002 and Sep. 2006. Notice the rainfall that we received during Dec. 2005 and Jan. 2006 when Jackson Bottom was flooded. (See also Flooding at the Preserve.)

The following charts show how the rainfall has varied
during the wet and dry seasons. Notice how dry the summer of 2006 was.

Note that the scale on the y-axis of the following chart has changed (maximum value is 4 inches). Notice again how dry the summer of 2006 was. The rain gage measured less than 1 inch of rain from June through September.
